ARCHITECTURE HERITAGE and DESIGN | 7 Series founded and directed by Carmine Gambardella

The XIX International Forum of Study ‘World Heritage and Design for Health’ addresses the issues related to the global pandemic in a multidisciplinary and systemic logic, as indicated by the UNESCO and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for the definition of projects and concrete actions that include the Welfare and Health of the Community. Therefore, the Forum aims to create a transversal critical dialogue, open to cultural contamination and ‘without limits’, in a logic of integration between skills that extends, and is not limited to, the following disciplines: Architecture, Culture, Environment, Agriculture, Health, Landscape, Design, Territorial Governance, Archeology, Economy, History, Sociology, Security, e-Learning.

CARMINE GAMBARDELLA, UNESCO Chairholder on Landscape, Cultural Heritage, and Territorial Governance; President and CEO of Benecon SCaRL University Consortium – Research Centre on Cultural Heritage, Ecology, Economy (University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Pegaso University, University Federico II of Naples, University of Salerno, University of Sannio).

The activities collected in this volume are developed within the framework of the research programme PNRR PE5 – CHANGES, Extended Partnership 5, and specifically within Spoke 8 – Sustainability and Resilience of Tangible Cultural Heritage, funded by the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Spoke 8 addresses the challenges of Tangible Cultural Heritage (TCH) through an integrated research model that combines technological innovation, scientific methodologies, and humanistic approaches. Its main objectives include the development of digital infrastructures for inventories and cadastral systems to support multiple knowledge pathways and maximise accessibility; evidence-based evaluation workflows to identify the relevance, value, and cultural potential of sites, areas, and territories; and tailored strategies for inclusive and participatory management, fostering sustainability, resilience, and community engagement.
Within this research framework, the Study Days, called Layers of Knowledge: Space, Time and Meaning, were held on 1–2 December in Venosa (PZ) at the museum venue of the Archaeological Park, marking the conclusion of a three-year research path. The initiative was synergistically organised by the Thematic Lines 1 and 2 and, while presenting their respective outcomes, it aimed at displaying their strong complementary perspectives.
According to this approach, the event brought together all the Spoke partners and the projects funded through the cascade calls, providing a comprehensive overview of the results achieved, the interactions among research strands, and future perspectives.
The Study Days were structured into thematic sessions focused on the core methodological pillars of Spoke 8, including georeferencing strategies, the analysis of temporal stratification, and the semantic integration of heterogeneous data through advanced platforms for querying, interpretation, and dissemination.
Contributions from partners and cascade call projects demonstrated the richness and coherence of the research activities, highlighting how different lines of investigation operated within a shared conceptual and operational framework.
Two case studies were central to the event: the Complex of the Santissima Trinità in Venosa and the Cathedral of Acerenza. Exhibitions and guided visits at both sites enabled direct comparison of 3D documentation campaigns and architectural analyses conducted during the project, fostering dialogue with other research lines and providing historical and architectural perspectives that effectively integrated the digital tools and
methodologies developed within Spoke 8.
The Study Days also represented an important dissemination opportunity, encouraging the sharing of results and dialogue among partners, researchers, professionals, and cascade call teams. The collaborative atmosphere and continuous interdisciplinary exchange confirmed the strength of the network established over the three years and its potential to generate new shared research trajectories. The initiative concluded the Spoke 8 research path with a positive assessment, highlighting both the quality of the results and the maturity of the collaborations.
This volume collects the pre-acts of the Venosa Study Days, reflecting the thematic organisation of the event and the structure of the research programme. Section I, dedicated to PNRR partner projects, is articulated into three parts: Archaeology and Historical Landscapes; Cultural Heritage, Communities and Value Creation; and Digital
Methods and Information Systems for Heritage Knowledge. Section II presents the projects funded through cascade calls and focuses on Innovation, Governance and Intelligent Systems for Cultural Heritage, showcasing experimental approaches, applied research, and innovative models that expand the research framework of Spoke 8.
Taken together, the contributions in this volume demonstrate how archaeological and architectural studies, community engagement, governance models, and advanced digital methods converge into an integrated framework for the sustainable, resilient, and shared knowledge of tangible cultural heritage.

From the XXI FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and DWELLING ON EARTH
to the XXII FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and CITIES IN EMERGENCIES
World Heritage and Dwelling on Space – World Heritage and Cities in Emergencies: this is the title of the International Forum “Le Vie dei Mercanti” which reached its XXII Edition in 2024. A story of love for the Earth, its Inhabitants, Landscapes, Architecture, Cultural and Archaeological Heritage told by more than 7000 Scholars and Lecturers from all over the World to with the aim of integrating expertise, sharing and disseminating scientific knowledge and implementing best practices to protect and safeguard our planet. The focus of the Forum is no longer be only Inhabiting the Earth but is stretched and extended to Inhabiting Space, in a broader sense, to reflect on the impact of natural ecological disasters and armed conflicts on Cultural Heritage. Now more than ever, with the war in Ukraine, geographically closer than others, and with the latest events in the Middle East, the theme of wars and conflicts has become even more present in our lives. Armed conflicts, synonymous with death and destruction, as well as weakening the social and economic fabric, put at risk the cultural heritage of besieged countries whose destruction has a strong symbolic as well as strategic significance because of the enormous identity value that resides in cultural heritage which stimulates a sense of belonging and social cohesion. And it is precisely in order to deal with the tragic devastation of entire cities and territories and the terrible wound inflicted on the cultural heritage of peoples that the scientific community must create starting points to implement important and immediate actions aimed at safeguarding monuments, architectural works, archaeological sites, works of art, manuscripts, books and other objects of artistic, historical or archaeological interest, as well as scientific collections of all kinds. If the future is an eternal now, as I remind every year, it is good for the Academy, Scientific Institutions, civil society, and stakeholders involved to make their knowledge and expertise available to promote a more widespread and in-depth knowledge on the issues regarding the safeguarding cultural heritage during armed conflicts.

Dal XXI FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and INHABIT THE EARTH
Al XXII FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and CITIES IN EMERGENCIES

Dwelling on Earth! That is the essential goal, synthesized by the title of this conference, towards which we have been working with “Le vie dei Mercanti” forum over twenty-one years. It still remains today the same perspective for us. An intent to be pursued with greater commitment and providing even higher effectiveness, as we all are now aware of being in an emergency with the dramatic scenario opened by climate change. Therefore, what are we to do now with respect to this global imperative? First, I would like to start from the work we have done in every annual forum, the interconnected focus on Ecological Transition, Contamination, Legacy, Knowledge and Disaster, as regards their impact on World Heritage. In that way, the concern for the habitability of our Earth has not only integrated skills, experiences, good practices of Scholars and Academics, but has also created a scientific community from around the world for discussing such multidisciplinary topics. We had the conviction that collaborative action requires not only practices for control, but also a reliance on human ability to ever succeed in defending his patrimonial value with the strong determination to re-design our everyday places. This is the best way for transmitting to the future the values that heritage has passed on to us and we must protect. The pursued goal is obviously not only to act in advance with respect to an environmental disaster, but also to promote in our world a design process in order to re-design the relationship between each man and his living environment.

Al XXII FORUM WORLD HERITAGE and CITIES IN EMERGENCIES
