Non si intende rintracciare in questo volume un’organica compenetrazione di argomenti: nell’avvicendarsi di tematiche eterogenee, accanto alle storie di edifici del passato e dei rispettivi progettisti, alle vicende di ambienti naturali inestricabilmente connessi a strutture urbane storicamente consolidate, ai ragionamenti sulle politiche culturali che animano nuovi scenari urbani, la finalità è quella di proporre strumenti per il progetto della contemporaneità. Qual è quindi la parola chiave che orienta complessivamente questa raccolta di saggi – frutto di percorsi di ricerca avviati da tempo – e spiega le modalità che i singoli autori hanno utilizzato per affrontarli, controllarli e comunicarli? Per cercare di fornire una risposta concreta occorre probabilmente individuare il destinatario di queste letture in chi si occupa di progetto di architettura. In tal senso i singoli contributi presenti forniscono un ventaglio di strumenti che alimentano la riflessione alla base della ricerca progettuale contaminandola con contenuti multidisciplinari.

The intent behind this book is not to trace an organic amalgamation of topics: in the alternation of heterogeneous themes, alongside the histories of past buildings and their designers, to the fates of natural environments that are inextricably linked with historically consolidated urban structures, to the reasoning on cultural policies that animate new urban scenarios, the aim here is to trace “instruments for the project” of contemporaneity. So what is the keyword that provides overall orientation for this collection of essays – the result of research paths that have been pursued for some time – and which explains the modalities that the individual authors have used in tackling, controlling and communicating them? In order to provide a concrete response, it is probably necessary to identify the readership of these works as those who are involved in “architectural projects”. In this sense the individual contributions here provide a range of instruments that nourish reflection at the foundation of the project research, contaminating it with multidisciplinary content.

Il nostro fil rouge, che parte dall’architettura domestica di Satoshi Okada – rivelandone la condizione di architettura naturata – in contrapposizione al Museo di Plants and People di Hiroshi Naito – in simbiosi con la natura –, si snoda attraverso il lavoro sulle relazioni con il contesto naturale di Tham & Videgård – fino a palesarne il riflesso nell’esperienza del Mirrorcube – soffermandosi poi sulla sintonia tra arte natura e architettura che si manifesta nel museo della fantasia di Günther Behnisch del 1999, sul rapporto con gli orizzonti delle topografie artificiali del Rolex Learning Center di SANAA e sulla suggestione di architettura come presenza vivente di Koen van Velsen (1998-2001) a Hilversum; ci si inoltra infine nella convivenza con eventi dirompenti antropici e naturali affrontando l’ipotesi di Tadao Ando, con il progetto del ‘95 per ri-naturalizzare l’isola di Awaji, e le reazioni, in termini di architettura, alle dinamiche della natura vulcanica in Macaronesia per concludersi nel polder di Zeewolde dove un giardino delle sculture si incarica di “annettere” al paesaggio l’esile sagoma del padiglione de Verbeelding realizzato nel 2001 da René van Zuuk.

Our leitmotiv has the domestic architecture of Okada as its point of departure, revealing its condition as a natured architecture, juxtaposed with the museum of plants and people of Hiroshi Naito that is in symbiosis with nature. The leitmotiv continues to weave through the work of Tham & Videgård on relations with the natural context – up to rendering visible the reflection of this work in experience of Mirrorcube – dwelling then on the harmony between art, nature and architecture that manifests in Behnisch’s Museum of Imagination (1999), on relations between horizons and the artificial topography of the Rolex Learning Center by SANAA and on the suggestion of architecture as a living presence in the natural world of Koen van Velsen (1998-2001) in Hilversum. We move then into the cohabitation with disruptive natural and anthropic events considering the hypothesis of Tadao Ando in the 1995 proj ect of re-naturalizing the island of Awaji, and the answers, in terms of architecture, to the forces of nature in Macaronesia to then conclude in the Zeewolde polder where a garden of sculptures takes on the “annexing” into the landscape of the slender outline of the pavilion realized in 2001 by René van Zuuk.
